Back
then, depression was the most common health problem college students face. In a
recent study, anxiety has taken depression’s place.
Anxiety
results in one’s inability to function, thus keeping a person from doing
his/her regular tasks. This happens when stress overcomes us, followed by over
thinking and even worrying.
Anxiety is
most likely experienced during exams, deadlines, or hectic projects. The stress
in a college student rises to a high level and leads to anxiety.
Some
symptoms of anxiety include stress, failure to concentrate, irregular
heartbeat, headaches, and the likes.
The New York
Times reported that according to a study conducted at Penn State record at
least 100,00 students visiting the clinic with problems concerning anxiety
Anxiety
issues have skyrocketed since the previous years, sometime between 2010 and
2013. College students of today have trouble dealing with anxiety compared to
those in older generations. Most students have sought help, others on
medication.
"They
can't tolerate discomfort or having to struggle," Dan Jones, director of
counseling and psychological services at Appalachian State University told The
Times. "A primary symptom is worrying, and they don't have the ability to
soothe themselves."
Although
anxiety is very much treatable, not all victims of anxiety get the medication
they need. A person may not notice the symptoms first, but it’s better safe
than sorry
In a college
environment, it is best to help one another out. Be each other’s guide in the
stress and struggles college has to offer. It is not advisable that one
underestimates anxiety.
