Mental Health Awareness Month – Family Fun Day is the Key to Bond with Families on the Same Struggle

It’s May and it has been declared that this is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month. This declaration was made by Cherokee National Principal Chief John Baker. People and families gather together to really study mental health issues such as anxiety, ADHD, autism, and the likes.

Parents will know what to do and how to deal with such issues involved with their child. Oftentimes behavior cannot be truly deciphered. Some actions may brush off as healthy while others may need some attention.

The HERO (Helping Everyone Reach Out) Project’s goal was to extend a hand to families to encourage them to work together on Mental Health Awareness. HERO Project arranged a family fun day including all kinds of games and team building activities.

“All kids and families, at one point or another, struggle, and we’re just here to help them get through that struggle,” said HERO Project Manager Dallas Pettigrew. Furthermore, he stated, “More than anything, we want to help people in the communities reach out to support each other.” He also added, “What we know is that parents know more about parenting and how to take care of each other than we do. So we try to empower families and communities to take care of each other.”

The parenting groups worked to give advice to one another and to spread health awareness within their desired communities.

These other families supposedly have lived through these struggles. With their experience, they can share stories with fellow parents. As a result, they will be more aware of the signs of mental illness. Hand in hand they can raise Mental Health Awareness and even build better bonds.
